Jeffrey Ladd and longtime friend, educator, and pioneering photographer Thomas Roma will discuss Ladd's most recent exhibition 'Lay of the Land' at the home of gallery co-owners Nat and Katie Ward. There will be a selection of Ladd's prints on display and tours of the nearby exhibition both before and after the talk. Jeffrey will be connecting remotely via webcam for this event.

Andrea Modica was born in New York City and lives in Philadelphia, where she works as a photographer and teaches at Drexel University and the International Center of Photography. A graduate of the Yale School of Art, she is a Guggenheim Fellow, a Fulbright Scholar and the recipient of a Knight Award.
Her photographs have been featured in many publications, including the New York Times Magazine, the New Yorker, Newsweek and American Photo.

In those days of social turmoil, random destruction, and trigger-happy militiamen, one never knew what to expect to see on the streets. The quick-witted Lebanese turned the radio into a lifesaver. Beirut radio’s terminologies normally used to inform motorists which streets to avoid due to congestion, Selkeh w Emneh (safe and clear) began to be used by one creative radio announcer to warn motorists which streets were free of kidnapping and sniper fire. The two words quickly became the catchword for the civil war, so much so that a Beiruti couple named their newborn twin girls Selkeh and Emneh.

What is the fate of artifacts and architecture left behind by a people in flux? A lamentation; a funeral dirge for a city wounded but still living. The Book of Lamentations found in the Old Testament is a series of poems that grieve the destruction of Jerusalem. These verses cry for the return of a city’s divinity, and give voice to survivors who recount their dead loved ones. With each piece a small song for her home, for the loved and lost, Rola Khayyat’s work echoes this traditional lament.
Combining photograms that create and catalog a symbolic vernacular of conflict in Lebanon with a video that addresses the Lebanese Jewish Diaspora in New York, Khayyat engages the fragility, failures, and small victories of permanent politicized identity. Drawing on her childhood experience in the 1980’s during the height of the Lebanese Civil War, Khayyat proposes a version of normal from a position on the edge of stability. It is a gesture that identifies and clarifies the cognitive dissonance and psychological distancing that persists while the world burns on our screens.
Awards & Opportunities
The Capricious Award will provide one photographer with the resources and editorial support to bring a body of work to fruition. The award will be juried by photographers, critics and curators, with the intent to select a photographer whose work is both distinct in point of view and boldly relevant to the unfolding issues of our time. The inaugural award continues the legacy of Capricious Magazine, culminating in the form of a photo book to be published Fall 2017.
One winner will be awarded with resources, valued at $10,000, geared towards the production of a limited edition book. This includes access to our in-house design and editing team and international distribution.

We are looking for photobooks, zines and photobook-related materials focused on political and social protest to be included in a reading room that will first be shown at the PGH Photo Fair in April 2017. Eventually, all of the books and materials will be donated to a library or institution. The photobooks from our last project, Contemporary Latin American Photobooks (CLAP!) were included in a catalogue and donated to the Hirsch Library at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
10x10 Photobooks is a non-profit organization with the mission to foster engagement with the global photobook community through an appreciation, dissemination and understanding of photobooks. Founded in 2012, 10x10 offers an ongoing multi-platform series of public photobook events, including reading rooms, salons, publications, and partnerships with art organizations and institutions.
